Vermont’s high tax burdens place unsustainable pressure on families and businesses. We believe in a fair, predictable, and competitive tax system that allows Vermonters to retain more of their earnings, supports growth, and avoids funding endless increases in spending. Simplifying the system and ensuring middle-income residents are not disproportionately impacted are central to our approach.
- Property Taxes: Vermont faces among the highest property tax burdens in the nation, with education-related property taxes projected to rise 7-12% in 2026 due to unchecked public school spending and expiring relief measures. We advocate for meaningful relief, particularly through education funding reform, to reduce this strain on families and businesses.
- Income Taxes: Vermont’s high progressive income tax (top marginal rate 8.75%) hinders competitiveness. We support lowering rates and flattening brackets to keep Vermont competitive with neighboring states.
- Estate Taxes: Vermont’s estate tax threatens wealth retention and intergenerational transfers, especially for family farms and legacy properties. We propose repealing the estate tax or fully conforming it to the higher federal exemption level to prevent wealth flight, retain retirees and family businesses, and support long-term stability.
